the Wicklow area arrived about 3,500 years ago, the stone age people settled on
the high bank across the river from the Leitrim Lounge. This area is one of the
most important historical sites in Wicklow Town. By the 8th century the area was
under the control of the Ui Garrchon tribe. The name Wicklow is of Viking origin and it has been found difficult to source the true meaning of the word. There is general consensus that the word 'Uikar-lo' refers to meadow or grassland. The first portion of the word may mean bay. it has also been translated as perhaps meaning Viking, the Norse word for sea robber or pirate, it may even be a form of family name.
